Intervues

What is a video interview?

Updated 2026-09-16

A video interview is any hiring conversation where the candidate appears on camera — whether live with interviewers, one-way recorded responses to preset prompts, or an AI-led structured session that adapts follow-ups based on spoken answers.

Three common video interview formats

FormatHow it worksBest for
Live videoRecruiter or panel asks questions in real time via Zoom, Teams, or similarLater-stage depth, culture fit, panel consensus
One-way asyncCandidate records answers to fixed prompts on their scheduleEarly volume screening when conversation adaptability is not required
AI-led video/voiceSoftware conducts structured conversation and scores against a rubricHigh-volume first rounds with consistent criteria

Pros and cons for candidates and employers

Video adds signal for roles where presentation matters — client-facing sales, executive communication, teaching — but introduces bias risk when interviewers overweight appearance, background, or home setup unrelated to job performance.

Connectivity and device access vary widely in India. Requiring high-bandwidth video for a warehouse or field role may unnecessarily shrink the applicant pool. Many teams use voice-first or phone screens for frontline hiring and reserve video for later stages.

One-way video tools are cheap to deploy but weak at probing incomplete answers. Live video scales poorly. AI-led structured video attempts to combine async convenience with conversational depth — quality depends heavily on latency, ASR accuracy, and rubric design.

Making video interviews fairer

  • Use structured questions and scorecards — same prompts and rubric for every candidate.
  • Offer audio-only fallback when video is not job-relevant.
  • Train interviewers on interviewer bias and similarity effects.
  • Document why video is required for the role in the job analysis.

Frequently asked

Is a one-way video interview an AI interview?

Not necessarily. One-way tools often record fixed prompts without adaptive follow-ups or automated scoring. AI interviews imply structured evaluation, which some video products add and others do not.

Should every role use video screening?

No. Use video when on-camera communication is job-relevant. For many operational roles, voice or structured phone screens measure the same competencies with less friction.

How does video relate to asynchronous interviewing?

Asynchronous interviewing means candidates complete steps on their own schedule. Video can be async (one-way) or live (scheduled). Async AI voice interviews are another async format.
